Ingrown toenails
What are ingrown toenails?
Ingrown nails, also known as onychocryptosis, occur when the edge of a toenail, usually the big toe, grows into the surrounding skin instead of over it.
This condition can cause pain, swelling, and redness in the affected area. Ingrown nails often result from improper nail trimming, tight footwear, or genetic predisposition.
Common symptoms include pain along the side of the toenail, inflammation, and sometimes infection. In more severe cases, there may be pus drainage or the formation of hypergranulation tissue.
At Rebound Podiatry, we seek to conservatively manage ingrown nails where possible. If you are experiencing recurrent flare-ups, then nail surgery may be suggested. This is done in-house under local anaesthetic and usually takes under an hour.
